Edition of Manuel de Tavares’s motet “Parce mihi Domine”

It is now available the edition of the motet Parce mihi Domine I prepared of Portuguese composer Manuel de Tavares for the MusicaNeo website. The work is score for seven voices (SSAATTB) and is by far the best-known composition of Tavares’s musical output.

Manuel de Tavares (c.1585-1638) was born in Portalegre a Portuguese city near the Spanish border. He was chapel master in Spanish cathedral of Las Palmas, Baeza and Badajoz and his surviving works are extant in these cathedrals music archives. The motet Parce mihi Domine comes from another source: the New World. The work survives in Puebla Cathedral (Mexico), choirbook III which also includes Gonçalo Mendes de Saldanha’s Missa pro Defunctis.
