Text on Hermitage Soundscape in Angra do Heroísmo

I have recently publish an article on the Brazilian journal Revista Maracanan (written in Portuguese) about the context of historical soundscape surrounding the hermitage of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios in Angra do Heroísmo, during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The text, titled “The Liturgical-Musical Activity of the hermitage of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios: Expression of a nobility Identity in the city of Angra in the 16th and 17th centuries”, focuses on the liturgical-musical activities in and with this hermitage in Angra. It was integrated in a solar, house of one of the most influential noble families of Terceira Island and the Azores islands, the family Canto e Castro. The hermitage was a place were various ceremonies were celebrated and where music was present, whether in the form of plainchant or possibly also some polyphony. Numerous processions were made with the hermitage as part of its itineraries and it also appeared in the collections of Portuguese Marian sanctuaries.

The text is available in Humanities Commons.
