Edition of two Psalm Settings by Francisco Martins

There is now available the edition I prepared for the Polyphonia series of Edições MPMP comprising two psalm settings by Portuguese composer Francisco Martins (c.1617-1680).

Martins’s activity as chapel master of Elvas Cathedral in mid-seventeenth century brought the copying of two small choirbooks with music he wrote for use at the Cathedral. These books are now preserved in Elvas Municipal Library. One of the books contains music for the offices of Vespers and Lauds in which we find the two psalm settings that make this issue 39 of the Polyphonia series.

Both are for four voices, the first being a Confitebor tibi Domine and the second one a Dixit Dominus. These settings are written in the usual psalm musical idiom of the time, drawing much from the falsobordone writing.

Preview document is available at my Humanities Commons profile, and the work is available at Edições MPMP online store.
